With content writing being included in the list of the most lucrative jobs of the future, it is no surprise that the phrase has become so popular. More than 80% of marketers include content marketing in their digital marketing strategy. There are different types of content marketing but one popular question that people have is the difference between copywriting and content writing.
Content Writing and Copywriting – Are They the Same?
We have noticed people use the terms interchangeably but in reality, they are used to describe two different types of writing. Before we get into the details, both copywriting and content writing are great opportunities for a person to get a job and earn money in the digital marketing field.
Copywriting
A copywriter persuades a customer to get a product using his/her writing. The copywriter researches the target audience and creates content that will urge the person reading it to take some kind of action relating to the sales of the product.
For example, you might be explaining the quality of the product and urging them to buy it or you might be aiming to get more leads through calls. Whichever the purpose, the content helps drive the audience towards it.
Some examples of copywriting include:
- PPC ads
- Social media ads
- Sales emails
- SMS ads
- Landing page content
Content Writing
Content writing is similar to copywriting but it aims to educate or entertain the reader rather than to sell. The content here has to be of high quality and useful to the readers.
Content writers usually do not promote a product or service but instead, seek to educate or create a relationship with the readers through their content. The readers, when satisfied with the content, might later convert into customers.
Some examples of content writing include:
- Blogs
- News articles
- Tutorials
- Newsletters
- Case studies
Copywriting vs Content Writing – Which Would Suit You the Best?

Some companies tend to use the same person for both these jobs but a lot of them hire experts from different skill sets. To know which would suit you better, you need to know the differences between the two and the requirements that would make you a good content writer or copywriter.
- Content writing is mostly aimed at general brand awareness while copywriting is majorly focused on increasing sales.
- Copywriting usually involves short-form content that immediately appeals to the reader. Content writing involves long forms of content like blogs that educate or instruct the readers.
- Copywriting persuades the reader to take sale-related action while content writing can increase organic traffic. The long-form contents are usually provided with links to the website while short-form contents come with CTA buttons.
- The results of copywriting can be evaluated within a short time but with content writing, the results take time to show.
Requirements of Copywriter vs Content Writer
The major requirement for a content writer would be the ability to research and provide content that briefly covers the results. A copywriter on the other hand should focus on a writing style that appeals to the reader and creates a sense of urgency in them to get the product or service.
Content writers are usually required to be strong with their grammar skills and they have to deliver the content clearly and understandably. Copywriters need to be aware of the recent trends in social media and probably use a language that would easily reach their target audience. This might include incomplete sentences, grammatically incorrect sentences, casual language, misspelled words, and more.

Long-form contents are perfect for SEO and hence content writers are expected to have a clear knowledge of how SEO works. A copywriter, on the other hand, would be expected to know the basics of SEO and how to effectively use it in short-form content.
Blogs and social media content tend to generate organic traffic to the website but the short promotional content helps convert the traffic into leads and customers.
How to Use Content Writing and Copywriting Effectively for a Business?
By now, you would have understood that both, content writing and copywriting are essential for a strong digital marketing strategy.
There are three major things to remember while creating both long-form and short-form content.
- Know your target audience
- Use appropriate language and voice
- Always give the best content
With these key points, you would be able to provide the right form of content.
